Special Session on Internet of Things in Smart Cities Global Wireless Summit (GWS’13)
Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA
June 24 – 27, 2013
Recent studies have predicted that by 2050 seventy percent of the world population will live in urban areas, while more than a half of the world’s population already lives in cities. Different urban-environment stakeholders (technicians, city planners, politicians, researchers, etc.) are urged take measures aimed at guaranteeing the fulfilment of some key quality criteria related to the sustainability and efficiency in the city domain. From a pure engineering approach the city represents a unique ecosystem for testing and assessing new services and technologies, Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) in particular. The fact that cities represent a strategic meeting point between the citizens (urban society) and the technology provides us with an additional dimension that can be exploited for continuous crowd-sourced creativity scenarios. From the technology standpoint, fuelled by the recent emerging of a variety of enabling device technologies on the market, such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Near Field Communication (NFC) and embedded sensor and actuator nodes, the Internet of Things (IoT) has stepped out of its infancy and is at the verge of becoming the next major extension to the current fixed and mobile networking infrastructures and an integral part of the Smart City scenario. If such a scenario unfolds, it is not hard to conclude that the design of the IoT and its architecture will be strongly influenced by the requirements of the Future…

1st CFP - Sociable Smart City Int. Workshop @ IE'13
CALL FOR PAPERS ----------------------------------- SOCIABLE SMART CITY Int. Workshop at the Symposium on Smart Cities during the 9th International Conference on Intelligent Environments IE'13 (http://www.intenv.org/), July 16-19, 2013, Athens, Greece http://collectivecitymemory.net/sociable2013 Poster - http://collectivecitymemory.net/sociable2013/files/2013/02/CFPSociable2013.pdf ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT DATES Paper submission due: Sunday, 24 April 2013 Author notification: Tuesday, 15 May 2013 Camera-ready due: Wednesday, 30 May 2013 Conference Dates: 16-17 July 2013 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AIM & SCOPE The diffusion of ubiquitous computing into modern cities and the massive use of mobile devices have shifted researchers vision to explore ideas about the cities of tomorrow; terms as “smarter cities”, “iphone city”, “sentient city”, “digital cities” have emerged. There is a wealth of paradigms applying ubiquitous and pervasive computing to urban spaces focusing on developing city network infrastructures, optimising traffic and transportation flows, lowering energy consumption, etc. These works emphasise on providing new services to citizens and enhancing their daily routine. However, a city is not just infrastructure and services; all modern cities share the same infrastructure and offer similar facilities, still, each and every one has evolved a unique character, depicted in every neighborhood’s architecture and monuments. Cities are the people that inhabit them, their memories, stories, concerns and the culture that develops through their social interaction. As urban computing lies on the intersection of architecture, social interaction and design of computer systems for use in urban areas, it does not plan the city of the future but it allows people to interact…

CityScripts: a social tool for SmartSantander experimenters
The CityScripts prototype is aimed at experimenting with sensors and actuators in the city of Santander composing mash-ups integrating sensor data with social networks and other online data sources.
An important aspect of this project is the provision of a personal workspace in which each user can compose public data from city sensors with personal data from his/her own personal devices and services including social profiles bringing a social dimension in the IoT paradigm.
Let us to make a brief overview of the Cityscripts workspace and describe the steps to create a simple example using the data delivered by the real sensors placed in the Santander city.
The CityScripts Workspace
Main workspace sections are:
1 - Friends: a list of friends (at the moment limited to our twitter followings). Selecting a friend, it is possible to discover his/her shared things/services.
2- Sensors/Actuators palette: it shows the available Sensors/Actuators (things and services) that can be registered in the user workspace. In particular, two sensor categories have been realized ad-hoc for SmartSantander:
Geographic Selection: enables the creation of a collection of sensors in a given region
Abstract Region: enables the selection of sensors in a region and computes a single value for the whole region (i.e. the average temperature in a city).
3 - Added/Bookmarked Sensors: a list of added (using the palette) or bookmarked (from a friend profile page) Sensors in the workspace. They represent ready-to-use things. Each Sensor can be then connected to…

In this scenario, users utilize their mobile phones to send physical sensing information, e.g. GPS coordinates, compass, environmental data such as noise, temperature, etc. This information is fed to the SmartSantander platform. Users can also subscribe to services such as “the pace of the city”, where they can get alerts for specific types of events currently occurring in the city. Users can also themselves report the occurrence of such events, which will subsequently be propagated to other users who have subscribed to the respective type of events, etc. The users receive the notifications on the occurred events via a smartphone application, SMS and e-mails in the preferred language. All users interested in receiving the notifications have to register with the service thereby defining their personal profile (including e.g. the preferred language) and selecting the information they are interested to. This subscription can be done via a web interface. If the Council wants to provide the service also to users without web access, it can provide a phone number of a help desk to be called in order to subscribe to the service with operator support.
