ACM/Springer Mobile Networks and Applications (MONET) Journal Special Issue on Smart Object Applications and Management In the context of Future Networks, the term “smart objects” is used to refer to commonplace devices, such as sensors and actuators, which are enhanced with computational intelligence as well as with additional capabilities, such as the ability to communicate and/or work with other systems or services. Smart objects are essential elements of cyber-physical systems, and are essential elements of multi-faceted applications in diverse fields such as logistics, smart buildings, intelligent transportation, and smart city applications and services. In particular, smart objects play a foundational role in the up-and-coming R&D area of “smart cities”, which aims at fostering sustainable urban development through the ubiquitous interweaving of real-world infrastructure with online and city services. The MONET special issue on Smart Object Applications and Management will look into the possibilities that smart objects bring about for various types of networks, including wired, wireless, and cellular, and how new services and applications can be deployed and managed with them. Smart objects incorporate monitoring as well as control functions, and need to communicate with each other (or other systems) and with gateways. In many cases, communication is based on wireless sensor networks integrated with an object, such as parts of a building, logistic goods, vehicles or environmental sensors and actuators. In other cases, communication is based on a hybrid approach, where part of the network is infrastructure-based, while the rest has a varying, self-organizing topology. We invite authors to…
The annual European Wireless (EW) Conference is one of the leading conferences in the wireless research area. Although it started as a European conference, the scope of the Conference has evolved to cover a wide range of global issues at the core of wireless and mobile technologies and related issues. The 19th European Wireless Conference 2013 (EW2013) is organised and hosted by the Centre for Communication Systems Research (CCSR) at the University of Surrey from the 16th to the 18th April 2013. The 2013 edition is aimed at addressing a key theme on “5G-Technologies and Spectrum Crunch in 2020”. Call For Papers: International Workshop on Pervasive Internet of Things and Smart Cities (PITSaC-2013) http://ants.inf.um.es/pitsac To be held in conjunction with the 27th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications (AINA2013) http://www.aina-conference.org/2013 Barcelona, Spain, March 2013 Submission deadline: October 15th, 2012 Scope: This workshop aims at gathering researchers and developers from the fields of the Internet of Things, Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing and Smart Cities to discuss the technologies and research challenges associated to new applications and services in Smart Livable Cities. The Internet of Things is a key enabler for the realization of smart cities as it allows for the pervasive interaction with/between the smart things leading to an effective integration of information into the digital world. These smart (mobile) things – which are instrumented with sensing, actuation, and interaction capabilities - have the means to exchange information and influence the real world entities and other actors of a smart city eco-system in real time, forming a smart pervasive computing environment to achieve a more livable city. Pervasive Internet of Things and Smart Cities (PITSaC) is an International Workshop focused on the extension and integration aspects of the secure Internet of Things and pervasive computing technologies. The objective is to reach a global access to the services and information through, on the one hand, the so-called Web of Things and on the other hand, the efficient support for global communications, in order to embrace the machine to machine (M2M) communications in the future Internet of Things composed of…
We are very excited to announce that SmartSantanderRA App has been released on Google Play and App Store. SmartSantanderRA is a free App for Android and IoS smartphones based on augmented reality technology that has been developed within the SmartSantander project. The App includes information about 2700 places in the city of Santander divided in different categories: beaches, park and gardens, monuments, Points Of Interest (POI), tourism offices, shops, art galleries, museums, libraries, culture events agenda, shops, public buses, taxis, bikes, parking places, etc. It allows real time access to traffic and beaches cameras, weather reports and forecast, public buses information and bike-rental service, generating a unique ecosystem for citizens and visitors when walking around the city. On starting the AR view, the App creates on the smartphone screen, an overlay over the camera with nearby POIs. If a particular POI is selected, further information (title, short description, photo and distance to the POI) is displayed. Apart from that, the App allows creating the route to that place or playing digital content related to the POI (e.g. videos) if it is available. Anyway, the best way to see what the App offers is to download and install it. Already more than 1200 downloads (56 % IoS, 44 % Android) since 3rd August.
