AIM & SCOPE
The diffusion of ubiquitous computing into modern cities and the massive use of mobile devices have shifted researchers vision to explore new ideas about the modern cities. Many paradigms are presented applying ubiquitous and pervasive computing to urban spaces focusing on developing city network infrastructures, optimising traffic and transportation flows, lowering energy consumption, etc. Numerous new services are provided to citizens enhancing their daily routine. However, a city is not just infrastructure and services; a city is the people, the place and their interactions. Urban computing lies on the intersection of architecture, social interaction and design of computer systems for use in urban areas. The focus of this workshop is on the future of modern cities exploiting urban computing. This workshop seeks to bring together researchers, practitioners and cities’ stakeholders to discuss and share their ideas and contributions in diffusing urban computing into modern cities and to present their visions and set future directions for transforming modern cities into smart cities.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
The workshop solicits two types of original papers:
- (a) full papers and
- (b) short papers such as work-in-progress or position-papers.
Submitted papers must not substantially duplicate previously published work or have been submitted in parallel to any journal, conference or workshop with proceedings. Papers submitted to UCMC should be in pdf and follow the IEEE CPS format, according to the general Instructions for Authors of IISA2013. See the IISA2013 Instructions for Authors page (http://iisa2013.unipi.gr/instructions-for-authors) for appropriate templates, in both Latex and MS Word environments. Papers for UCMC should be submitted in pdf format through the general IISA2013 paper submission system (http://iisa2013.unipi.gr/submit-edit-paper) using the EasyChair conference management system.
Important notice: While submitting a paper for UCMC login to the EasyChair system, select TRACK III on the EasyChair system and then check the UCMC Special Session Group box bellow the abstract section, otherwise the paper will not be marked as a UCMC paper submission. Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE Proceedings of IISA2013 and will be included in the IEEE Xplore digital library (IEL, http://ieeexplore.ieee.org). Authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their paper will be presented at the conference. Clear instructions for the preparation of a final proceedings version will be sent to the authors of accepted papers. In addition, a selection of the best papers from the workshop will be invited to submit extended versions to a Journal special issue.

AIM & SCOPE
The diffusion of ubiquitous computing into modern cities and the massive use of mobile devices have shifted researchers vision to explore ideas about the cities of tomorrow; terms as “smarter cities”, “iphone city”, “sentient city”, “digital cities” have emerged. There is a wealth of paradigms applying ubiquitous and pervasive computing to urban spaces focusing on developing city network infrastructures, optimising traffic and transportation flows, lowering energy consumption, etc. These works emphasise on providing new services to citizens and enhancing their daily routine. However, a city is not just infrastructure and services; all modern cities share the same infrastructure and offer similar facilities, still, each and every one has evolved a unique character, depicted in every neighborhood’s architecture and monuments. Cities are the people that inhabit them, their memories, stories, concerns and the culture that develops through their social interaction.
As urban computing lies on the intersection of architecture, social interaction and design of computer systems for use in urban areas, it does not plan the city of the future but it allows people to interact with their cities in novel ways aiming to shape and decide the future of the city. The focus of this workshop is on the social and cultural aspects of the smart city. In particular, we seek to study how urban computing alters the city, the perception of people about the city, the communication among people and the social and cultural impact on the city and on city life.

TOPICS OF INTEREST
The goal of this workshop is to define what is a “sociable smart city” and how this vision can be realized. The issues and questions that we will try to answer include:
-How do we see a “sociable smart city”?
-How ICT infrastructure of a smart city can enhance participation, wellbeing and sustainability?
-Can digital technologies enable citizens to act on collectively shared issues?
-Can local knowledge be transformed into collective one in an urban context?
-How big data about a wide range of urban processes can be opened up and exploited to reveal shared issues, processes and patterns?
-How can a smart city assist citizens to develop a shared sense of belonging and responsibility?
-How urban computing enables story-telling, game activities, learning processes, artistic installations?
-What digital tools and media can be designed to connect people and their experiences with the city?
-How social media can organise citizens into collective goals?
-What processes can be developed to assist regeneration of urban areas?

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
The workshop solicits two types of original papers:
- (a) full papers (10-12 pages) and
- (b) short papers (4-6 pages) such as work-in-progress or position-papers.
Visionary and position papers are encouraged.
All contributions must be submitted as PDF files. The workshop accepts manuscripts in IOS-Press format
(http://www.iospress.nl/service/authors/latex-and-word-tools-for-book-authors/).
Submitted papers must not substantially duplicate previously published work or have been submitted in parallel to any journal, conference or workshop with proceedings. All submitted papers will be reviewed by at least two reviewers and judged on originality, technical correctness, relevance, and quality of presentation by the Program Committee. All accepted submissions must be presented during the workshop.
All papers accepted in the Workshops program will be published as a volume of the Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments Series (ISI indexed) of IOS-Press and electronically available through ACM Digital Library.

Recent studies have predicted that by 2050 seventy percent of the world population will live in urban areas, while more than a half of the world’s population already lives in cities. Different urban-environment stakeholders (technicians, city planners, politicians, researchers, etc.) are urged take measures aimed at guaranteeing the fulfillment of some key quality criteria related to the sustainability and efficiency in the city domain. From a pure engineering approach the city represents a unique ecosystem for testing and assessing new services and technologies, Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) in particular. The fact that cities represent a strategic meeting point between the citizens (urban society) and the technology provides us with an additional dimension that can be exploited for continuous crowd-sourced creativity scenarios. From the technology standpoint, fuelled by the recent emerging of a variety of enabling device technologies on the market, such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Near Field Communication (NFC) and embedded sensor and actuator nodes, the Internet of Things (IoT) has stepped out of its infancy and is at the verge of becoming the next major extension to the current fixed and mobile networking infrastructures and an integral part of the Smart City scenario. If such a scenario unfolds, it is not hard to conclude that the design of the IoT and its architecture will be strongly influenced by the requirements of the Future Internet (FI). The scale, heterogeneity and constraints of the IoT devices and the distinct nature of envisaged interactions pose significant challenges for their successful integration into the FI architecture. This Special Session focuses on IoT technologies, allowing for smart city rollouts, deployments and growth. Part of the scope of IoT technologies has been already deeply studied but others are already coming and their composition and application in the area of smart cities has not been almost tackled. The remarkable expansion in work in this area, which is mainly attributed to the unique timing between the unquestionable need for making cities more efficient, and an enormous set of ICT technologies having become available and affordable. As of today, however, some major issues remain to be tackled, which pertain to technologies, their integration and interaction, architectures, applications, services, privacy, to name a few.
In the light of the above, the main purpose of this Special Session is threefold:
• to obtain a coherent and concise synthesis from the abundance of recently emerged material in the area of IoT technologies and architectures,
• to promote unprecedented approaches in analyzing, designing and optimizing smart city scenarios through the use of IoT technologies and architectures, and
• to identify open issues which remain as a challenge towards using IoT technologies in smart city markets. Topics of Interest: Given all above, the technical topics of interest in the area of ICT for Smart Cities include, but are not limited to:
• architecture designs (heterogeneous technologies, enormous data streams, etc.)
• smart city control platforms (use of diverse data streams, sensing/control/notification, etc.)
• city data storage, ownership and access methods (crowdsourcing, cloud approaches, etc.)
• experimentation testbeds and experiences making use of IoT technologies over a smart city scenario
• business, service and billing approaches (business models, exploitation approaches, etc.)
• privacy issues (escrow-type approaches, ensuring citizens, etc.)
• innovative applications (unprecedented use of smart city streams, new applications, etc.)
